What is Completion?

We sometimes call it “closing the loop”. Emotions are programs for action. That means they exist in your mind to move you to do what you do. When an emotion comes up for you, they start what is called an Emotion(ing) circuit (or loop). The emotion makes a feeling state start going around the loop. The feeling state's main goal is to light some fire under you to make sure you keep doing the action that the emotion is programmed for, until the feeling state is pushed completely to the end of its loop.  As long as you're doing the action, the feeling state keeps making its way around the loop. We don't like how feeling states "feel" so a lot of the times we never close these loops.

Sadness is an emotion, a feeling state for it could be the lump in your throat, or that overwhelming urge to cry. Think about how you "try not to get choked up" or "try to hold back tears". Those are ways you keep yourself from closing up the loop. This is called an emotional incompletion. And the feeling states get left inside the loop like “backwash”, stuck inside. Then you start accumulating loops! Loop after loop, after loop, until you've got a pile of them buried in your “closet”!
